Because Life Can Be Messy

NOTHING LIKE IT

Nothing Like it

(or, When you Gotta Have, You Gotta Have It)

Hosea 10:12 -- Plant goodness, harvest the fruit of loyalty, plow the new ground of knowledge. Look for the Lord until he comes and pours goodness on you like water.

Let’s talk about revival. First, what revival is not. It is not an event. Or evangelism. Or emotionalism. Although there may be elements of one or more of these present in revival.

When it is boiled down, a revival is when God reveals things about Himself to us. He wants to fill our heart with Himself. He wants to set us free from whatever holds us captive. He wants us to enjoy His presence. He wants our love for Him to overflow into service to and for others. And He wants us to reflect His love into our world.

And if you look at the above, you will see a theme. Most of what revival is centers around relationship. And, unfortunately, this filters over to our relationship with God. We zoom into prayer, rattle off a short list of what we need, then zoom off to the next project or appointment. If God wanted to talk to us, He couldn’t because we don’t give Him the time.

I believe that we might not ever encounter the kind of revival we could and should have, and the kind of revival God wants for us, unless we arrest the culture’s view on relationships. To do this we need to:

  1. Fix our relationship with GOD. Psalm 95: 1-7
  2. Fix our relationship with EACH OTHER in the CHURCH
  3. Fix our relationships OUTSIDE the church

THE LIFE GOD BLESSES

Media

2 Chronicles 20:15b: “This is what the LORD says to you: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.”

I want to set the stage by telling a story. In the Bible we call ‘em parables. Jesus made a great many of His points through the use of parables. For that reason, I want to use a parable today:

The Ballad of Jed Clampett.

Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named Jed; Poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed; Then one day he was shooting for some food, And up through the ground come a bubbling crude

A man named Jed… 1. Remember you are CREATED by God. Ps 139:14 (CEV) -- and I praise you because of the wonderful way you created me … of this I have no doubt. If we are to live a life God blesses, we must begin by remembering one foundational truth: WE ARE NOT GOD.

2. Recognize you are created in the IMAGE of God. Gen 1:26a (Msg) -- God spoke: "Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature.

Poor mountaineer… 3. Be HUMBLE. Col. 3:12 (CEV) -- God loves you and has chosen you as his own special people. So be gentle, kind, humble, meek, and patient. God is incomparably high and great, but He humbles Himself to take notice the things He created.

4. Be GENTLE.  Mt 5:5 (CEV) -- God blesses those people who are gentle. The earth will belong to them!

Barely kept his family fed… 5. Don’t be ashamed to have a SIGNIFICANT NEED.  Ps 70:5 (CEV) -- I am poor and needy, but you, the LORD God, care about me. You are the one who saves me. Please hurry and help!

He was shooting for some food… 6. Be FAITHFUL to do your part. I Corinthians 16:13 (Msg) -- Keep your eyes open, hold tight to your convictions, give it all you've got, be resolute.

When up from the ground came a bubbling crude… 7. You will be BLESSED for faithfulness. Ps 119:2 (Msg) -- You're blessed when you follow his directions, doing your best to find him.

EXPECTATION LANE

Media

Psalm 122:1 – I was happy when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord”.

Psalm 22:3 -- For the Lord inhabits the praises of His people (paraphrased). We “expect” God to show up. We “expect” He will accept our praise and worship

I Thessalonians 5:17-18 -- Pray continually, and give thanks whatever happens. That is what God wants for you in Christ Jesus. We “expect” Jesus hears our prayers. We “expect” He will answer our prayers. We “expect” He will answer them by doing what He knows is best for us, not just what we want

Hebrews 5:6b -- Anyone who comes to God must believe that He is real and that he rewards those who truly want to find Him. We “expect” Jesus wants us to ask forgiveness from Him. We “expect” He will forgive us when we ask

John 16:33 -- I told you these things so that you can have peace in me. In this world you will have trouble, but be brave! I have defeated the world. We “expect” we can live our entire lives for Him, if we continue to trust Him to help us. We “expect” He will help us to do the right things He wants us to do. We “expect” He will help us to not do the wrong things we will sometimes want to do

1 Corinthians 3:6,8 -- I planted the seed, and Apollos watered it, but God is the One who made it grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have the same purpose, and each will be rewarded for his own work. We “expect” to bring our friends and family to church and to help them “find Jesus” too

GIVE GOD

Media

John 3:16 -- For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son …

God is a giver and He wants us to be like him

Proverbs 3:6 -- Remember the Lord in all you do, and he will give you success. The word for success here in this passage in the Hebrew literally means the ability to make wise decisions. That’s what you need more than anything else. For everything comes out of that ability to make wise decisions. You are going to face some tough decisions in your life. You need the ability to make wise decisions in your business, in your family, in your relationships. You need the ability to make wise decisions in your life.

Give God The First Day of Every Week -- Romans 14:8 God wants you to give Him that first day of the week. Just an hour. It helps us recalibrate our life and priorities. When I give God the first hour He blesses all the other hours.

Then give God The First Part of Every Day -- Proverbs 13:16 When I do and put Him first in my day He just helps me get more done. He expands my day. He blesses the rest of my day. Put God first in your day.

Next give God The First Portion of My Income --Proverbs 28:20 Put God first. Give back the first part. Do it first because if God’s not first place in your finances He’s not first place in your life.

Give God The First Consideration of Every Decision -- Proverbs 21:5 Pray about it. I pray “God, help me not make a mess of things. Close this door on me if it’s not the right door. God give me the wisdom to make the right decision here.”

Finally, give God The First Part of Our Effort -- 2 Corinthians 8:5
